I love street photography but it is an area I am most uncomfortable about. I don't like sticking my camera in people's faces - so to speak. But bit by bit I'm progressing.

I think with street entertainers or anyone deliberatly drawing attention to themselves that they can't really complain too much if someone does photograph them. It is uncomfortable though and its supposed to get better the more you do it. I might have waited for the guy at the back to be out of the screen and the singer to open his mouth but you have still captured the essence of what this part of the street was all about.

Hi Karen

Thanks for the comments - totally agree with you - I know you like street so I'm sure you've done this, taken a decent shot and then later found some nerk right in your background. but that's the challenge isn't it - to either get a clean shot or have the background add to the overall compostion. And agree again mouth open would have improved the shot.

He's another from the set:

Yes street entertainers lend themselves to shots but I hope people shooting them always make a contribution to their funds.

Hear! Hear! It can cost a fortune up in town. Lots of loose change in your pocket is a must in your workflow if you set out to photograph entertainers! Make the drop before you start clicking and make sure the entertainer seees you do it, then you can click away to your heart's content.

The second shot shows him doing something and tells us he can sing as well as strum.

Happens to me all the time, Drew :-) I have a shot I like and notice someone in the background and kick myself. Even though I told you about yours, I will go out today and make the same mistake myself! :-) Like this shot better because you can see him singing. He reminds me a bit of morten harket from Aha!

Ooh, what do you take me for!?

Yup - popped a few coins in his case, went over, shook his hand told him the pics would be on my website in a week or two, gave him a card and told him he could have any of the shots for free emailed to him and to look me up when he was famous.

Absolutely agree that you shouldn't feel shy about photographing people like this, but also you should throw some money in their pot. I like the use of black and white in these images. They have a good mood.

Thanks Mart - glad you like them.

Yes the pics lend themselves well to B/W in this case.
