RAW Issues

Hi,

Hopefully this is the correct place for this question...

I've recently started using RAW again (haven't since I've had the new camera for various reasons).

Photoshop elements 8 wouldn't read them, so downloaded the Adobe Raw plugin (5.6), followed the instructions and... it didn't work.

I was surprised as I haven't had a problem before and the windows 7 plugin worked fine.

It's a Sony A550 and produces .ARW files.

Anyone else had this problem? I'd volunteered to take some family photos on boxing day, everyone wants a copy and now I can't do anything with them.

Any help would be much appreciated!

The A550 should be supported by 5.6. Did you get the correct version of ACR - the one for Elements and not CS?

Thanks donoreo,

It appears I may not. I'm not sure, but after reading your post I searched a bit harder and found this page

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...atform=Windows

Which seems to have more RAW updates that I previously saw. I'm not sure where linked in from originally.

I'll give that a go and see what happens.

Thanks,

Hmmm, still no luck.

I think I've followed all the instructions properly. However, Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-ins\Elements 8\File Formats

Is not where I have it located, I'm currently putting it in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 8.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats

Could that be the problem?

Edit: I've also copied it into

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 8\File Formats

I use Elements on a Mac, so I cannot test the Windows stuff, but the last location is where the instructions say to put it. The (x86) in there means you have a 64 bit version of Windows and that Elements is a 32 bit program. If it is not working, make sure it is ONLY in the one location.

On my system, when I run the adobe updater from the help menu, it updates Elements and ACR if they both have updates. I am running version 9, so it may be different.

My suggestion would be the same as Don's. Try running the updater from within Elements. That should automatically download the latest ACR version for you without any hassle.

You could always give the adobe DNG converter a go if you get really stuck.

Or what about the software you got with your Sony to edit the raws?

It should go in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 8\File Formats\ - Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back. Then put your new, downloaded ACR in its place.

You're stuffed. Standard Adobe practice is to force their products into obsolescence as soon as possible. ACR 6.3 will not work with PSE earlier than version 9.0. So if you have 8.0 you can't update the RAW interface.

The work around is, as mentioned above, to use the DNG converter, making the files compatible with the earlier version of ACR that PSE 8.0 supports.

Or just buy a Pentax and save the RAW files as .dng in camera

The latest and last version of the Camera raw plug-in for Elements 8 is version 6.2

This from the relevant Adobe download page:

This new version of the Camera Raw plug-in replaces the original Camera Raw plug-in that was installed with Adobe® Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere® Elements 8 software.

It can be downloaded from here:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...jsp?ftpID=4810

To install the plug-in (which is also stated on the page linked to above):

To install with Adobe Photoshop Elements:
NOTE: You must follow all of the new instructions in order to successfully install the Camera Raw Plug-in for Photoshop Elements.

1. Exit Photoshop Elements
2. Open the download file and double-click CameraProfiles.exe and follow the on-screen instructions
3. Open My Computer
4. Double-click Local Disk (C
5. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 8\File Formats\

6. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
7. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 5.
8. Launch Photoshop Elements.

If, installed correctly i.e. in the correct location, there is absolutely no good reason why your Sony A550 raw files (.ARW) should not open from within Elements 8.
