40D was a nice camera - had one for 10 months - upgraded to Nikon though!! Actually went Pentax from the 40D but lack of long zooms and slowish AF was a drawback - got a D300 now. I don't think the E3 was quite what a lot of us E1 fans were waiting for - E30 looks nice though.

Well Amy if the site is not driven by advertising it certainly dedicates a lot of screen space to it. As I mentioned before in the beta, 1/3 of my screen on PR is advetising space. I posted a screen shot before as requested by one of the admins and never heard any more about it, in fact my screen shot mysteriously disappeared from my gallery with no explanation and although I asked about it no one answered. So no matter what you say about advertising on the site there is too much in my and, obviously, others' opinion. It is also everywhere I go on the site, no respite, denying it will not change that fact.

Best of luck with the site

Phil

Hi Phil,

I think you may be mistaking some content for advertising? - like the Digital Camera Magazine, PhotoPlus Magazine and Photographer of the Year slots on the right-hand side? Perhaps you are viewing on a relatively small screen too, as this makes a bit of a difference but still doesn't take adds up to a third.

We weren't trying to deny there's advertising on the site, apologies if this is how it came across. Advertising is the sign of a healthy website as as a commercial website we need to run ads.

Hi Rachel
Thanks for your reply, of course you are right about the content on the right hand side, my mistake, it is not all advertising but most of it is and it is rather wide and distracting. You're also right about the size of my screen, it's a 17" CRT (not wide screen) and of the 13" horizontal veiwing available 4 5/8" is taken up by the right hand banner. Which is actually just more than 1/3. I think I'll need to consider parting with some cash and upgrade it. I do understand the need for advertising, I just find it very distracting because of the amount of it that is animated, and I understand that if it's attracting (or distracting) my attention then it's doing what it's meant to do.

I'll still be here trying to get used to the foibles of the new site. Hope you guys are getting some training in change management, it is obviously required to get us moaning users used to the new site and, in the end, enjoying it as much as the old one.

All the best

Phil

I really liked the old dcmag site and never really knew why there had to be a whole new site. I miss the familiar layout and recognising people by their avatars (which hardly anyone seems to have now!). I found the answer to no end of obsure or specific photography questions on there in no time and it has been a great help to my photography. Yeah I do kinda miss it...
First time I logged into this site today, had a quick look before. I may drift off like others if the forum isn't as good as the old dcmag one, but still found answers invaluable on there and never did find a site I prefered more so hopefully this one will become as good, rather a lot of different sections though!!!
Maybe we just need to get used to a new layout. It seems alot more similar to another mag site which I wasn't really keen on, prefered the simplicity of old dcmag.
