My New Year Resolutions seem to be much the same as everyone else's.

I want to be braver. I started that one today by uploading a pretty dreadful photo into the weekend competition, but I needed to start somewhere! I am going to continue by uploading some into the critique thread.

I need to learn how to use Photoshop, I have had Element Nine for three weeks and it is scary!

I need to use my camera and get used to the controls. I have bought a book [sales again] that gives you 52 projects to do and I am going to do them. Mmm, when the book arrives! I like Amy's idea of a photo a day but at this point [complete beginner] I feel I need more direction than that or I could end up carrying on taking snapshots. I am also going to join my local camera club, hopefully it won't be full of old men talking about the size of their equipment

Lastly I need to lose weight. I lost a lot a few years ago but have put two stone on since damaging my knee last March. On the waiting list for an op so hopefully some dieting and walking holidays should shift it once I can get about.

In case anyone's interested... here's the beginning of my project 365.... whether it'll last beyond say... a month we'll see:

P.S. Kent lass - someone I know suggested doing "theme weeks" or "theme months" to help with the 365, so if you're looking for direction that could be something to consider.

I've got a few project ideas bubbling away in the background as well, which should help to fill in a few days. I also need to bring my camera to work a bit more as well as I work in a completely different city to where I live so there's double the subjects almost.

KENTLASS - I understand how you feel about your 1st competition entry - you say it is 'pretty dreadful' but it's not. You see it as dreadful but thats your lack of confidence. My 1st entry was in the 'PORTALS' week. It was soooo rubbish I deleted it. The next weekend I got 2 votes, the week afer I got 3. Builds your confidence no end. Keep trying. It's amazing how your confidence and knowledge grows. I'm very very happy with my entry this weekend, not expecting votes but can't wait for the critique. Keep battling away. I'mon facebook and MSN if you are interested in chatting more, we can learn together, just let me know.

It is just a panel with either 3 paintings on or 3 photographs. There are some frames here :

Or you can just copy and paste your photographs to a huge white background in PS

Usually a panel of 3 images which tell a story. Here is one of mine.

Thank you DD, and yes learning together seems a good idea! I am on FB as well.

I do know what a tryptych is! A few days ago PhotoRadar were offering free Photoshop downloads, one of them was a set of 25 different Tryptych frames. Go to the sites home page and you will find them under the section Get the latest News in the list on the right.

Ok, now to upload my first Critique photos!

It's not easy photographing fog due to the fact it's grey so can fool the camera. Eyes are very clever at seeing more than the camera can record, and can adjust very quickly as you look around the scene. Check your histogram and dial in exposure to get most of it in the middle of the range.

It wasnt the exposure as such as I always photograph using manual. It was just not as interesting as I thought it would be. There were 6-7 street lights running along a motorway and the fog was making the light look diffused and there was a glow around each light. To my eye it looked really exctiing yet when I got home I just thought it looked nothing special on the monitor. A bit annoying really as we had stood there freezing half to death for over an hour :-)

Is your friend doing the same project?

Nice blurred background with enough infomation to confirm where you where. I would have preferred a wider angle to show what she was photographing so it was in context.
