Winner!

Digital Camera won Magazine of the Year at the recent Future Publishing Awards, beating market leading, household name mags like Total Film, MacFormat etc.

Watch out for a photo of us accepting our prize and saying 'aw shucks' to the new MD in the next issue

We're all dead chuffed and thanks for your continued support - however good a mag is, it's stuffed without readers!

Keep the feedback and suggestions coming

Well done :-) Does that mean you will all get a pay rise now?

I am not so sure about that, Jim. It would just attract people entering simply because the money is on offer. I think someone mentioned on facebook a few weeks ago that you never really get to see any of the winners of poty even bothering to contribute to this site or share their work afterwards. They seem to take the cash prize and vanish off into the distance. That would be the same with a monthly cash prize, someone unknown would win, then will never be seen again.

It would work if a prerequisite to entering poty or a monthly cash competiton was you had chalked up a certain amount of posts on facebook or this forum.

Ah Karen, you're beginning to get the hang of it. That's what happens when professionals and amateurs mix. Put a few quid up for grabs and naturally the professionals will enter, that's the very nature of the beast, and who can blame them? I like the part where you say' someone unknown would win', unknown to who?

Congratulations to DCM on their success. Looking at the opposition I thought Cross Stitch International was a strong contender.

Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with competing for a cash prize. I think what I meant was, it would be nice if winners stuck around and shared more work and info on their techniques etc... You have a look at some of the galleries of the winners and runners up etc.. and they are empty. Its just a shame to not see more of their work and maybe learn something. Anyway, I am not trying to make a big thing of it, it was just an observation :-)

Karen, that's probably because the pro winners are out on assignment somewhere in the world and no one has a landline contact or mobile number or email address for them or knows where they are . . . (said with tongue firmly in cheek).

Well done DC, and yes, without your readers you are stuffed, as Mr Harris so politely stated.
I and others have in the past made suggestions that the POTY overall winner/category winners be interviewed for the magazine, but that suggestion seems to have gone downstream.
It would, I imagine, also be quite easy to do such an interview at the awards ceremony or to email some questions to the winners and get them to send back the answers, in the event that they could not attend the awards evening. I saw a digital photography magazine competitor (published only online) do this a few months ago, where a number of pros in their field (portraits, landscape, documentary etc) were sent exactly the same questions and they sent in their responses. Made for very good reading and filled a lot of pages, which were illustrated with the pros' photos and how they set up their best images.

Regards,
Denise

PS: If DC magazine needs an experienced freelance reporter to interview photographers, I am available!
