What is Fine Art Photography?

Recently, I came across the Fine Art Photography entry on Wikipedia. What it says is:

"Fine art photography refers to photographs that are created to fulfill the creative vision of the artist. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism and commercial photography. Photojournalism provides visual support for stories, mainly in the print media. Commercial photography's main focus is to sell a product or service."

Now, I know that I am talking about art and that it is down to your own personal opinion (as well as semantics) but, according to that definition, am I a fine art photographer? I don't do it for journalistic or commerical purposes.

What do you think?

Fine Art Photography also includes even the very abstract or disturbing images too.

In my opinion journalistic and commercial photography can also fit the bill of Fine Art Photography, and that's part of the fascination, as each photographer will try to obtain / produce visual media that evokes thoughts in others with both good or bad composition skills; remembering that a bad composition may have been part of the photographer's thought process, purposely to get the viewers eye to stop and maybe make a comment.

Photography is definately an Art, and good photography is as beauty, in the eye of the beholder.

Perhaps I should have made this clearer that it was more a philosophical point rather than a "I don't know what it is" type question.

I am trying to decide what artistic style of photography I should adopt for my images in the future, but there are just so many to choose from it's proving nye on impossible to make a selection. I know if you're thinking of becoming a fine art photographer you should really develop your own style, but of course we have all been inspired and influenced by other eminent photographer's whose work we admire.

Photograph from the heart (the subjects you find interesting in an interesting way) and your personal favorites will naturally become your artistic style

From what little I know, the term Fine Art refers to the quality of reproduction of the art work, ie the image has to conform to a set of guidelines for longtivity, archival properties etc. Reference has to be made to acid content and stability. It doesnt realy refer to the content of an image as in wether it is "good art", a Turner landscape or a Lanting masterpiece. Remeber Wickapedia cannot be regarded as acurate as its content is based on public postings and opinions.
The dictionary says art is the result of something being man made and therefore anything can be art and anything should be. What is discussed here is what we as individuals like as art. Take a humble family snap shot. A "badly" composed portrait, enlarged and framed in a gallery by a famous artist can cause such a stir of emotion, yet the same image, printed in boots or Jessops, on a desk can be so insignificant. Does that mean it is any less art? As artists ourselves, and we all are!!!! we should follow what is in our hearts and minds when composing images and enjoy the journey.

Possibly the best qoute/advice you could have . Fine art...abstract....commercial...landscape...etc.... .they all stem from the same beginnings...the love of capturing a subject in photographic form. Photographry is an art in itself and has many facets and branches...just like other art forms...take music.. you have dozens of genres...classical...jazz....blues...hip-hop....pop....rock...Photography has its own forms too.....
