I find the best method for long exposure night photography is to switch to manual and use Liveview. Set a suitable aperture then adjust the shutter speed until you see the image in the LCD as you would like to see it. then take your shot.

Here's an example taken using my Canon 7D, obviously on a tripod.

Exif # Date taken: Sat, 06/11/2010 - 19:23
# Focal Length: 31.0 mm
# Aperture: f/2.8
# Shutter Speed: 1/2 sec.
# ISO: 2500
# Flash: Flash did not fire

Hi Harry, Thanks for your input. I originally wondered whether it was possible to use the live veiw facility on the camera. I really like the photograph. You've got some great shots in your gallery.

In live view the only way the movie works is to press Ok, if not just press the shutter for a slap less mirror.
