Hi Audrey88

I can only agree with Andy.
This is the third time I have entered this competition, and the first time I had one picture with two votes and one comment, and one with just one vote. I had only just bought my first digital camera then.

I have come quite a way since then and have learnt a lot by just looking at other people's photographs. There are plenty with the 'Wow Factor' and a lot that do nothing for me. Judging photographs is always a bit personal, apart from the technical side of things, you like it or you don't.

In a competition this size, there are so many entries, that a lot of brilliant pictures are probably not seen by most people. Do you look at other people's photographs? If you see one that takes your fancy, do you say so and vote?
If not, try it and get more involved. Everyone likes to get feedback, so this should not be a one-sided affair.

I had a quick look at your pictures (I had not seen them before) and they look smashing, but are mainly fashion shots. It may be that people who do not 'do' fashion (I am one of them) simply do not look in that category. I think you are doing very well, by the way, and have gathered quite a few votes.

Do I sound too much like 'Nanny knows best'? If so, I apologise.

Good luck!

Reinardina.

(This is the longest post I have ever placed on a website!)

Hi Reinardina,

Not too much that Nanny thing . So, thank you very much your votes, and your advices too.
I know the category of fashion is a really special area of the photography. As you said, lesser people interested in it. Pictures about beautiful landscapes or flowers are much more popular, but despite of this fact I have chosen this one because I would like to achieve that not just the fashion fans wants to see this kind of pictures. Maybe sounds like a stupidity, but fashion should cover beauty but not that way "you have to be perfect", much more that life is amazing because there is a lot of beauty and happiness in it, sometimes we are tend to forget about this. Lot of pictures are try to evoke feelings with poverty and illnesses but not always honestly (( just my experiences )).

And yes, I have looked and looking the pictures, but that's true I have to find more time

Thanks again for your post, and I wish good luck too!

Audrey

Hi Folks,

I can tell you from experience that the readers votes don't matter outside of peer review. I had good fortune the year before last on an image that had all of 1 vote (thanks Mum!).

Keep posting and don't let the social networking side of things get you down or make you doubt your imagery.

Cheers!

I think the voting is just a quick way for some of the selectors to sort through the pool, although they appear to be aware of the popularist voting and are choosing on their own terms. Last year I entered way in advance of the competition closing and tried to market my images (as they recommend you do). Got a fair few votes and nice comments, got in the top three readers choice for a category but no further. This year I entered a day before closing, got one vote and then the shocking email that I had been shortlisted.

As mentioned above, don't let the social networking part of the competition whip you into a frenzy, just focus on working out which is your best material and explaining why. The work will stand out for itself!

Good luck to everyone!

Hi Karl,

I know votes don't count at all towards the end result, it's just a bit of fun and encouragement. I do however have a problem with photos that appear out of nowhere, with dozens, sometimes over a hundred, votes 'automatically attached,' so that the pictures soar straight to the top. Often they are just 'empty' votes, but occasionally there are comments too and more often than not, the commentators have no portfolio of their own.

I know it's silly to be bothered by it, but there it is.

Congratulations with 'The Email,' by the way!

1st, excuse my bad English, hope you can understand it well...
Ahaa, next time don't put the VOTE button if its really does not matter one bit LOL. Also the "Share This" link should be removed, i think for those who new to the competition like me, surely that "share this" button; i think, is the way to promote our photos into the other website(s) and gain more votes. So far, none of my submission are in the shortlist, its okay, maybe there is no "lucky" for me =)

Any way, good luck to those who have been in shortlist

Regards,
Annamir...

Hi Annamir,

Your English is perfectly understandable, don't worry about that. And also don't worry about people like me, who go on about the number of votes some photos attract.
It is made abundantly clear that the voting system is for support only and does not influence the end result, so I should not really be bothered.

For me however, the votes and comments are part of the pleasure I get from this competition and also a way to learn more about photography. Making 'return visits' to the portfolios of people who visited mine, very often shows a totally different approach to taking pictures and it fires my imagination.

When I find a highly rated photograph, especially one where I cannot see why it is so special, I read the comments and look at the pictures of the commentators, in the hope to find out and therefore 'see' the picture with different eyes. If there is nothing there (no comments or portfolios) I feel disappointed and a bit cheated.

I did not realise the 'Share this' facility induced people to register en masse, just to vote, but it makes commercial sense I suppose. The wider the audience, the better for the site owners and advertisers!

Well, that's my rant for today!

Have a nice weekend all of you! And fingers crossed for all of us who still 'live in hope.' (Me included.)

Reinardina.

Congratulations Karen! I'm looking forward to seeing them, once they finally appear on the site.
