Unhappy 7D too expensive for what it offers

I was very disappointed when reading the specs of the 7D.Its speed of 8fps versus 6,5 fps on the 40D compared with a giant price difference and not even being a full frame camera, makes me ask who this camera is aimed at.

In Norway with fairly similar pricing to Britain, the 7D costs only 150 pounds less than Nikon's D700 which is a full frame camera and with speed enough for most action shots. Among Canon's own range, the toughest competition is the 40D and the 50D, both much cheaper than the 7D. The 40D can still be picked up at about 550 - 570 pounds new.

So should I look for a camera in the price range of 1600-1700 pounds, I would certainly not go for the 7D unless it was a full frame camera, but it's not and has nothing more outstanding to offer except for a double processor which in my opinion doesn't justify such a price. I was very surprised to see this new release by Canon, a camera that falls behind the competitions in every way.

Whereas for me, this is pretty much exactly what I`m after. I shoot wildlife, so to go to a FF sensor would mean losing the reach on my lenses. 8fps and a decent AF are the must haves on my list. Why would Canon make this camera a FF anyway? That`s what the 5D MkII does? I know alot of people keep mentioning it, but I really don't see what the issue of having a cropped sensor is.

I think it fits in pretty well within the range. Yes the price is a bit steep at the moment, but all launch prices are, they soon come down. I`m already aware of a place I can pick it up preorder for less than £1400.

I`ll wait for some real world tests on the AF, but I think I`ve found my next upgrade.

I agree regarding the cropped frame sensor against FF for the extra reach. It also has the advantage of greatly reducing Chromatic Abberations on lenses designed for FF cameras.

I think its a new line for Canon bridging the gap between their XXd series and Xseries. So expect a 60d in the future.

I was able to test a pre production unit in a actual field test for landscapes, Canon Phils. wanted a review.

My review can be found here...

I also tested it for infrared.

Well, I`ve put my money where my mouth is and preordered one...

Whether I get one of the first batch depends on whether they get a big enough allocation to fulfill orders. Fingers crossed!

In this months Tech Tips by Chuck Westfield, the question of where the 7D sits in relation to the other lines was asked and at least in part answered. http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0909/tech-tips.html

In summary though, expect a 60D and a 6D or 8D at some point in the future

No, not a replacement at all.
There are an enormous amount of different features on the 7D not on the 50D.
New processors, new AF, new metering, new sensor. It's the sports and wildlife shooters gap between the 50D and the 1D line. The same way the 5Dx is the wedding and protrait shooters gap between the 50D and 1DS line.
Extra reach from the crop, fast fps (same as my 1D2N), reasonable weather sealing. Yummy!

Im upgrading from the 400d which was a decent camera when it came out...After about 25000 exposures in all weather conditions and temperatures, the 400d is still working as on it's first day. But i envy the video and af functions newer cameras have...so im ashamed to tell, but YES! i have preordered a 7D for 1200.- Euros (Body) without VAT (i have my own shop, so i buy at the distributor...). Estimated shipping date is the 24th of sept.

All the whining about "ahh it is no full frame, useless, too expensive for a crop camera... too much pixels for that small sensor" i can hold against: the 7d's sensor is completely new designed. With it's mulitlayer-layout the imagequality is way above any other conventional sensor with such a high mp rate. I think, fullframe had it's time but the days of high quality crop and thour-third sensors are coming!
