Question Nikon D300 Custom Settings

I recenty started taking sport images, its real departure from my normal Macro and family shooting where you have a fairly calm environment to think about what your doing and can make changes as you go along. When shooting sport you have no control and have to keep up with the action, so you have to be well setup before you start if you want to get the most from your day. I've been using the sport settings recomended on these sheets below, with continuos focusing and A priority.

Do any sport shooters that use the D300 have any tips they would like to share or comments on the setting set out in the included sheets.

Might be better if you posted a link to the spreadsheet or put into a pdf, as most users wouldn't be able to read that.

Bob

I've got a few different banks setup.
1 for Football and one for equestrian stuff. I'll have a look at my settings later on and post them for you but I'll get totally flamed when you see some of them..... Auto-iso, dynamic focusing points and shooting jpeg with extra sharpening!

The camera is more than capable of doing itself so why not use all the features. Means I don't have to think about my settings and just shoot what I see.

Hi Mate, how you doing, I'm not as surprised as you may think, as some of the reading I've been doing suggests some of the settings you mentioned. Looking forward to seeing what you have, also, can you let me know if there are any examples of you sport shots on auto ISO, I don't want to miss any of the action but am afraid of letting the camera have its head

I've been super busy this evening and not had a chance to look out my settings but I'll do it over the next day or two. I'm sure there's a way to download the settings to a CF card if I remember rightly.

I'll see if I can do thatr and then email them over to you for a play.

Auto-iso works fine and you can set a maximum iso it goes to and will not go higher if you are worried about noise. I shot a Dressage evening at SNEC the other week and had to shoot at iso 2500 at the end of the evening to get the shutter speed up to 1/200th of a sec at f2.8. The in-camera noise reduction worked fine because I was shooting jpeg and the people who have bought the prints have commented on how clear they are.

When shooting sports you are more worried about catching the action than a bit of noise. As soon as you print it out as well the noise is barely noticeable on a D300. Got a D2X as a back-up body recently and it's not till you run them side by side that you see just how good the D300 is!!!!!. I would swap my D2x for another D300 any day!

Hi G, your correct you can export the settings to the card, you could then email them for me to try. I must admit though its hard to completely stuff up a pic with the D300, if the settings are anywhere near right, I just want the best settings I can get.

A relative has come over from NZ and he plays with Currie RFC, I went along to take som pics at his last game and it was great fun trying to capture the action I plan to go to a few more when possible, hence the interest in sport settings.

Great to hear your selling images, I've had a few published in the News and a local building has framed half a dozen of my Gore Glen series and they are on display so I'm well pleased
