B##t pod

Thanks 6ozDave. I've looked it up, it has potential I think, so I've ordered one! The idea is to put a monopod into it, mounting the camera on a ball joint at the top. For just a tenner it is worth a trial.
I'll report back how it works out

It's got to be worth it for a tenner !

Interested to see how you get on ?

Trip delayed

After all your help, I thought it only courteous to tell you that, unfortunately, we have had to put back our trip to the Sea of Cortez by 12 months since my wife has had serious shoulder surgery. A shame but maybe we'll avoid the effects of La Nina and I'll have a whole year to practice!

Try this for support I tried it recently and seemed to work OK
Whenever I am on holiday I carry my valuables in a bumbag.
When I need to support my camera I attach a short monopod and swing the bumbag around to the front and hey pressto a place for the foot of the mono.
Cheap and simple
