I think it was Arthur C. Clarke who came up with the computing triangle - FAST - RELIABLE - CHEAP, you can only ever get any two..

If it's fast & reliable - it's not cheap
If it's cheap & fast - it's not reliable
If it's reliable and cheap - you've guessed it

That's the box I have, all in black. It's a beauty! My set up was 700 quid without monitor. Just under a grand with monitor.

Awesome! Did it have the "turbo" button on the front? I mean seriously, why on earth would anyone not want the turbo to be on?

Jim - one thing to note (that you may already know). If you get Win7 64-bit, you need 64-bit software to really utilise it. So if you've got existing software that's only 32-bit, it will work, but it won't be optimal.

Yes, but it didn't make much difference. It took about three minutes to boot-up and to print a hundred page text document, I had to split it into three, as the memory couldn't cope with more than 35 pages.

my completely biased opinion on what my next upgrade would be would go something like this or should i say this is the system i built for myself recently

the processor has to be intel
i find with processors you get to a particular speed/spec and the price increase goes silly so i tend to go for the one just before the massive price hike in this case it was the intel I7 2600k 3.4gig sandy bridge

the mother board...
you can't go far wrong with asus and the board of choice was the asus p8p67 pro
it has pretty much everything you need along with some of the latest technology ( sata 3 , usb 3 etc.. ) and the build and reliability of asus
oh it is also quite a good board for overclocking if thats your thing

memory
8 gig corsair ( 4 x 2gig ) ddr3 16000mhz

as for graphics well maybe i do want to play the latest games some time in the future so it would be nice to have the capability
the graphics card of choice was the ATI radion HD 6900 with 2 gig of memory
again with graphics cards you can get good cards for not a lot of money but they can get silly with the prices i think the 6900 is somewhere in the middle

as far as hard drives go if you want speed it has to be SSD and my choice was a 128gig SSD for the operating sysytem which i think is big enough for most needs all data , graphics etc.. can be stored on external or additional internal drives
an ideal would be to have a second SSD drive to use for virtrual memory, scratch disks etc.. but i havn't got round to that yet

as far as sound goes it gets pretty good on board now but i still prefer the creative card route and have on of the x-fi cards in ther for good measure

a nice case with plenty of ventilation and water cooling has become very easy with the corsair H70 kit ( especially if you want to overclock )

well there you have it

total cost a couple of months or so ago just over a 1000 quid but should do pretty much anything and hopefully should carry on doing what i want for some time to come

told you it was a biased opinion

Matt - thanks for the advice

Cosmicma - that sounds amazing. Sadly our budget really can't go over 3 - 400 450 at a real push unless I go on a serious hunger strike ; )

Jim,

If money is tight, you could call the IT Manager at a local corporation, bank, school or library and ask if they had any reasonable speced PC's being thrown out, that you could exchange for a beer or two. You won't get an all singing all dancing PC, but you might get something reasonably, if nothing else you might be able to get a replacement screen.

When I worked in the corporate world my IT Manager would always have a stack of PC's in his office, ready to be collected by the recycling man. We had to pay to get the computers taken away!!

You could also have a look at Freecycle and gumtree in you area to see if anyone is giving/selling their old equipment.

Regards

Nick
