Wow thanks gang, that's a lot of advice in three days. I did say I was still coming to grips with my new camera so you'll have to excuse my errors in terminology, I'm getting there. I've been flat chat like a lizard drinking since posting the question so haven't had time to check many your suggestions. Will get back to you all tonight.

Thanks Cosmicma you're on the money. I checked my flash sync. and it was set to 'auto'. Swapped it for '1/200sec (fixed)', and it made quite a difference. And thanks everyone else for their suggestions. And yes I too am still wading through the manual. We rank beginners have to start somewhere. (I couldn't bring myself to read the manual for flat pack furniture though).

I have been having the same prob, when in av mode with my external flash. If you set to F8 in av mode it shows say 2sec, the flash fires but the shutter stays open for the 2 sec.

I have looked at the flash sync speed in Av mode it is in auto, the other 3 options are 0: Auto 1: 1/250-1/60sec auto or 2 :1/250sec. (fixed) Which one should you use ?

it depends on what you want to do
2 - 1/250th ( fixed ) would give the same results everytime at the same apeture where setting 1 - 1/60 - 1/250th would vairy the shutter speed between 1/60th to 1/250th depending on how much ambient light is available
slowing the shutter speed down is a good way to gather more ambient light without having to widen the apeture and risking blowing out hilights with the flash or just to balance the light

see my original reply, in aperture & shutter priority the camera is metering for the ambient light & using the flash to fill in the subject based n what metering mode you are using, so if you are in a dark area the shutter speed or aperture will reflect this in order to expose the scene without the flash. The flash then exposes the entire scene or the thing nearest the camera depending on whether you are on evaluative or partial or centre metering mode.

Try using the camera in manual mode, selecting your shutter speed & aperture & using the flash to determine what power it needs in ETTL mode.

You can meter the scene with the flash by pressing one of the buttons on your camera which will fire the flash alone, meter the scene & then when you press the shutter button should expose it correctly. Not sure what system you use so don't know what the button is but your flash manual will explain all.

So what you are sayingis that if you use A/P and the shutter speed is too slow, then you have to go to manual to get the balance right ?
