New Camera for travelling

Hi all, i hope you dont mind me asking for some advice. Im looking to pick up a new SLR as im going on holidays to New York and want to take some nice pics. Im going there to view the stunning scenery and also watch basketball and American Football. So the camera will need to be suitable for both of these. Im currently using a Lumix FZ50 but im looking to upgrade. Ive got a budget of around £450 - £500.
Ive been looking at these ones recently. Can any one please help?

Many thanks

Do a google search on camerabox. They get very mixed reviews.

1. Beware of Camerabox. They get 3.75 out of 10 at resellerratings.com.
2. Only you can decide what camera fits your hands best. Go to a shop & hold them, work the controls.
3. If you're going to NY, check out B&H and Adorama.

Have a look at your magazine. There are any number. Warehouse Express, Calumet, Park Cameras, Mifsuds, Jessops, Jacobs, just to name a few.

I was thinking of either picking up the Nickon D5000 with 18-55mm and 55-200mm twin kit or the Canon EOS 500D 18-55mm IS + 55-250mm twin kit.

Has any one used these? Which ones would people prefer?

The most important thing to remember is that it's what you think of these two cameras that really counts. Try handling them both in a shop and decide which one suits you best. They're both great cameras in their own right. Equally capable of capturing fine images, but it all comes down to the layout of the buttons, the feel of the camera in your hands and how easy you find the menus to navigate around.

I guarantee that you'll find some of us will favour one and the rest will favour the other! And our opinion counts for zilch!

Erm, what Ian (Onion) said above.

In reality, there is basically no difference between the two cameras and their respective kit lenses. The extra 50mm on the Canon lens isn't a massive amount but if you were really stuck for which to choose that might swing it.

As 'Onion' said, go to a shop and play with them. One will feel more comfortable. Buy that one.
