Sigma 24-70mm lenses...

Has anyone got one or used that can give me an opinion as to wether they are a good buy or should I keep saving for the Nikon one or possibly an older Nikon 28-70mm F2.8?

At present I am using a Nikon D70s but upgrading to either a D300/7000 soon.

Regards

John

I looked at the 24-70mm Canon fit when I bought my 7D but found it a tad soft at the edges at F2.8, it was nice and sharp at F5.6 but to me that defeated the object of buying an F2.8 lens.

In the case of Canon the 24-70L is a better lens in that respect so you may find that with the Nikon equivalent. That was how I felt about the lens I tried but maybe you should pop into a shop and try one on your Nikon body.

To be fair the Canon equivalent is about a 1/3 more expensive though.

Sigma have several different 24-70 f/2.8 lenses, so it might be helpful to distinguish between the version you're considering and the versions people have tried. It's also worth bearing in mind that most lenses are less sharp wide open than they are at more mid-range apertures, including Canon's 24-70 f/2.8 which exhibits some corner softness at 24mm wide open and even more at the tele end.

This is a good question. I've been wanting the nikon 24-70mm F2.8 for a while now. I have looked at the sigma offering which I believe is very good. However I'm going to save hard and treat myself to the beautiful nikon lens.

Very good point! Its this one

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/...5809/show.html

Its the latest (I beleive) Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG HSM

Also would the older 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED AF-S Zoom-Nikkor work on a full frame D700?

My brother in law has that version and he's had no complaints with it. You can see examples of his here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrisstading/4435331740/

That is the one I looked at, like I say I found it a tad soft at F2.8 but then that is my opinion.

I did pick up a second hand sigma 24-60mm off ebay for £160 which was a total bargain, it is an older lens but it is a bit of a gem and seems to me sharper than the 24-70.

ap4a very nice sharp image that but what aperture was it shot at?

I accept that there is going to be some softness at the edges but when I tried the lens it was to obvious for me to part with my money but then it could have been a poor sample of the lens or may be I am just to damn picky

I would say go and try one and come to your own conclusions.

No idea, I was just linking through to one from a series that the OP can have a look through if he wants to. Hence the word examples
