And the issue about having a past judge on the shortlist this year? Will you take that up too?

Stormsong,

As has been mentioned several times, the judges do not look at names when creating the shortlist.

Thanks,

Amy

Okay, so we should not be worried if a judge from last year wins this year's comp?

The simple fact is that as my image did not win the Photoanswers competition nor was printed in their magazine it's eligible to be entered into any competition I choose to enter it into.

Oh and for the record I am far from being Pro. I have to borrow lenses if I want to make an image.

Your image "A natural landscape" which is currently shortlisted in the Wildlife catergory, was published in the July issue of Digital Photo Magazine and appears on page 81. On page 80 it clearly states "THE PRIZES: All shortlisted entries receive £150 of Jessops vouchers to spend on the photographic kit of their choice."

Below is an extract from the eligibilty rules on the Photoradar website

Quote:
An image that has won a prize in a major national or international competition (one receiving more than 500 images) or that has been entered in such a competition where the results are still pending, is not eligible for entry. There is no entry fee associated with the Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2010 competition, with the exception of the 'Portfolio' category. All entrants agree to participate in any publicity in connection with this competition as required and to the use of your name and likeness for the purpose of promotion and publicity.
My sincere apologies if I am way off base with this but, what am I missing here?

I`m sorry I said I would not come back on here but needs must.
Having been contacted by the magazine to supply a self portrait, words and picture for inclusion in the next issue of DC magazine I should alert you that I have made the magazine aware of the controversy in this thread, my own failings in keeping organised folders and probably a mistake in submitting a bracketed exposure of an image that was shortlisted elsewhere and stating that, as said above by me throughout, I will go along with whatever the judges / admin say.

As an amateur, yes amateur Russ, that has just got into entering competitions in the last few months and does lots of for fun competitions both here and on flickr amd other sites just to help improve my own photography in the dream of one day advertising and going professional it looks like I`ll learn a hard lesson here. Well a few really if i count ones about human nature, jealousy and the like

I`m honoured to have been shortlisted for the competition anyway for an original image in my opinion that made best use of the conditions with amateur equipment - my old D80 - that stacks up reasonably well with others. I did not expect to win but am happy enough with my own abilities to accept there will be other opportunities if seek them and when I do enter comps I will always accept you win some , you lose some amongst multiple strong entries on such occasions.

The first (or is that the fifth) amendment seems appropriate at this time. However, I do agree that the rules should be abided by - why have rules in the first instance if they are going to be ignored or interpreted as anyone sees fit?

What are you missing? Well, for starters the fact that I wrote to PhotoRadar staff and disclosed the facts that you highlight and received a message back from Ben Brain saying go ahead and submit as the image as it did not win. I was placed in the shortlist and won a voucher, I did not however win the competition.

I don't appreciate the fact that your tone and accusations imply that I attempted to circumnavigate rules or cheat. Neither of these are things I would ever do and I offered a full disclosure of the image and it's history before submitting a high res prior to shortlisting.

You tell me - what else was I supposed to do?

As for that image appearing in ANY magazine... that's the first I've bloody heard about it!!! So I would appreciate a link showing this to me!

I had another image that I pulled from my submissions to this years Photoradar POTY precisely because it had been printed in the magazine and was gutted as it was a better photo than A natural landscape!

Poloroidsky,
On that evidence then Ben Brain needs to read their own competition rules. As I read it your picture should not have been entered, as it has already won a prize elsewhere!

A sentence I omitted earlier - EXIF data can be stripped from a digital file and replaced with other info. I know because I've seen a friend do it - I tried to get into a magazine and they loved the image but said they didn't allow interpolation and could see the shot had been taken on a Canon 300D so wouldn't use it. My friend quickly resized the image accordingly and gave me back a file stating it had been taken on a Canon 1Ds MkII with 16-35mm f/2.8 lens - if only !!

So just to confirm, you contacted Photoradar staff who knew you had won prize money for your image in a national and widely followed popular competition with thousands of entries but told you it was still OK to submit? It just gets better and better....
