I might be stating the obvious here, but I assume that you have selected the correct volume for recovery i.e. your card reader and not inadvertently selected your entire computers C drive for example.

### There was no mention of a card reader....only EOS camera which i chose. Having said that i think it did do the complete C drive. It has finally finished and i am stuck with 1000's of pics and icons that have been on emails etc/My Documents etc. To scroll all these pics is taking ages as one must start at the beginning everytime to view the next 100 pics....very frustrating.
In future download the images from your CF card to your computer and follow this up by making a second backup copy to an external drive. It always makes sense to have a minimum of 2 copies of your precious images. Then check both the original and backup folders to ensure that all the images have been correctly saved/backed up and then, only then, reformat the card.
### please see the initial post

update:

It seems i have over 200,000 jpeg files to click on....all at 100 at a time.
Unfortunately there is no "search" thus it is a laborious job and i am thinking of aborting the whole idea of ZAR. Their paid system was easy to navigate and worked so may be the way to go if i get any more hassles.
It has now been 2 full days on the PC and is becoming a nightmare.
If i could just scan the card reader contents it would be so much easier.
I dont want to delete the 9 hours of today however it looks like i will have to and start afresh tomorrow :{

Cheers for all your help thus far.......

But there is - look again at steps 2 and 3 of this link (which you should already have been following) http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm having first put the card in the card reader so that ZA will see it as a drive.

It sounds very much as though you've been attempting to recover your entire computers hard drive. With respect, if this is indeed the case then the problem lies not so much with ZA but rather with you not following the instructions to the letter.

Forseti has explained why it's a lengthy job. I have just done a trial run with an 8gb card, which completed in 25 minutes, this included the several minutes enumerating 7 drives plus my multi card reader.

Are you sure you're selecting the compactflash reader and not recovering images from one of your hard drives?

200,000 images suggest you have recovered your harddrive which will include any picture you have viewed on the internet, icons, Windows pictures etcetc. Suggest you abort this and run Zar again but make sure you are recovering form the flash card.

BINGO !!! Houston we do not have a problem :}
I now know where the problem initiated ....it gave me a choice of 5 places to choose from [NB; NOT ONE MENTION OF CARD READER ] so i chose one of the "removable" five and obviously chose the incorrect one.
I commenced ZAR yet again this morning and it took only 3 minutes to complete...yippee!!
Then a panel came up on completion saying "all data is beyond recovery...sorry"

Not to be out done i tried yet again and this time it recovered the pics.....sheer relief!!
I was as happy as a dog with 6 tails.

Mission [finally] accomplished and thanks goes to all those who contributed here and special thanx to Forseti for having the patience to stay with me on this....

Not quite true, as some data recovery software can recover data off a drive that has been overwritten many time, but that option will cost an arm and a leg.

Wink

I've down loaded and tried the ZAR program Steve recommended according to my understanding it should continue to work for imaje recovery after the fouteen day trial, it does its job very well and efficently, 8 minutes to read a 4GB memory stick well worth the download! nice one Steve
