External flash advice

Question 1

I currently have a single 580 ex2 canon speedlite I can control this off camera via flash triggers I bought off ebay or using the &D's remote flash system. I am looking to get a second external flash but cannto justify the cost of another 580 EXII and have read good things about the Nissin DI866 does anyone know if this can be controlled as a slave from the 7D?

Question 2

I also have an Interfit EXD200 studio kit which I am really pleased with however I want to experiment with some low key photography so need 2 flashes to illuminate the white background and two to illuminate the subject, currently I control the Interfit via a Kenro IR trigger that sits on the hotshoe.

I was wondering if I could use two speedlights to illuminate the background and the studio lights to illuminate the subject, well I know I can but how can I control this from the camera? My only thought was to control the stuido lights via the sync cable and usewireless triggers to control the sppedlights or the built in speedlight controller. I guess what I am asking is can the sync socket be used in conjuction with the hotshe?

Many thanks.

not sure about the Interfit kit, but you can usually configure the studio lights to fire off the flash from another light, e.g your speedlight.

Doesn't the 7d have an internal trigger for the speedlights, then use the wireless trigger for the interfit?

Cheers for the reply, yes the 7D does have an internal trigger but the built in flash needs to be up for it to work, even when you fire it in a mode where the internal flash is disabled it still emits a low strength flash. So that eliminates having anything in the hot shoe as it will obstruct the internal flash.

Oh OK, the other methods should work. I usually fire my main lights with a pocket Wizzard & the 2 lights on the background fire off the first lights' flash. You just need to make sure the little detector on the lights isn't blocked wit ha gobo or something.

Alternatively, the flash triggers you got on ebay usually come in sets of 1, 2 or 3 so you could just get another or a set with 2 or 3 triggers & use them.

Just found this on the net.

This new clip-on type flash unit is simple to use and incorporates an easy to read rotating colour display, it can also be fired wirelessly where it can be used as a master or receiver.

So, it should work OK.

Yep it can. Bought mine yesterday and works fine as a slave on 7d (using the pop up flash transmission though!).

Hello Wavemachine

I'm in almost the same boat as you (can you see me waving) wrt off camera flash:

Bought my Interfit two stand/umbrella system last week and am impressed for the price. I've been experimenting with my Camera triggering my 520ex and, like you, was looking for a second flash unit and couldn't bring myself to buy the 580 at such a price. But am wondering if the 430EX might not be as good as the Nissin?

Are you aware that you can group your falsh units and have them fire at different strengths?

I found this useful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKYDFHYZg3o
