Hi Mr Bump

Seems the problem is random. There is no firmware update at Pentax, and Sigma claim this is the first time they've heard of it. I have changed lenses and bodies (istDL), and had the same happening on the istDL, but with the Sigma 105DG Macro. Which seems to pretty much eliminate dirty contact points.

What happens when attempting to reduce the aperture to 2.8 is that it either refuses to go below 4 on the K5, or 3.5 on the istDL.

I suppose it is one of those problems one has to live with: switch off, fit a different lens, switch on, off, then revert to the Sigma, problem solved....Thanks for the offered help.

K5 firmware version V1.10 was released yesterday. It provides support for the new Pentax hotshoe-mounted GPS unit but it's not clear whether the update does anything else. Watch this space......

further firmware update

Old news really but for anyone who missed it K5 firmware version 1.11 was released to address an issue with version 1.10. It's all to do with use of the Pentax GPS unit so no essential need to udate the firmware unless you wish to.

Yet another firmware update, V1.12, for the K5 announced on the Pentax Japan web site:

Not much activity in the Pentax area of this forum of late. Perhaps everyone is too busy taking pictures???

Not a lot to say about Pentax for some time.... and they don't have a lot to say for themselves. Nothing new or "soon" from the CES at Las Vegas last week and not even any new lenses in the near future. I understand that the K-5 is the only APS-C DSLR model in production, as the K-r and K-7 have been phased out. Lots of small cameras, plus the Pentax-Q line, but only two bigger products being made - the K-5 and the 645D. So much for the Full-Frame...... if it comes, it won't be for a while.

As much as I'd love it (and Santa was particularly disappointing last year), I can't afford the 645D, and, before I put my money on the K-5, I wanted to see if Pentax might come up with a Full-Frame for under 2000 pounds..... so I may be sticking with my K10d for a while yet. If there's no sign of Pentax stepping up to compete with Canon/Nikon in the next year then I don't fancy their chances of survival in the more serious camera market in the long term (even if their compacts are very good and - with Ricoh's help - can get even better).
