r13 is not an error message, this refers to how many shots the buffer has left before it is full, you also DO NOT get this as the error if you have not set the apperture to the maximum apperture, off the top of my head it is FEE if the apperature is not set.

I have got the new lens ans whilst it no longer tells me that there is no lens attached I still have a problem with the auto-focussing.

It seems unwilling to AF on distant subjects on the shorter focal length but no problem AF'ing on distant subjects when zoomed in.

Conversely it has no problem AF'ing on closer subjects on the shorter focal length.

I have taken the lens and body to a registered Nikon engineer and he tells me the contacts couldn't be any cleaner.

He too is a bit stumped and is going to contact someone at Nikon UK.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Sorry, but my brain wasn't in gear when I answered that! That's the trouble after having forty winks before going on the computer.

It could be a faulty camera or a fault in the AF system withing the camera.
