Lens/body problem...

Hello again, need some advice on a possible problem with a lens.

I bought a 18-135mm AF-S off eBay and it said in the listing it was 2nd hand but working fine.

Upon receiving it, I fired of a few test shots and intermittently it said on the display "no lens attached" even though it was securely on the mount.

I contacted the seller and he was very apologetic and told me to return it which I did. He contacted me today and said he was sending a replacement so no problems there either.

My concern is that he tells me that Nikon lenses and bodies have a history of incompatibility problems despite being the correct model/series etc.

Is this true?

Cheers.

Not to my knowlege. Most of the lenses Nikon produced over the years should work fine on a Nikon digital camera, but some of the earliest might only work in manual mode. It really depends on what camera you have? A D70, D70s, D50, D80, D90, D1, D2, D200, D300, D700, D3, D3s or D3x will work with most of Nikon lenses. A D40, D40s and D60 will only work with lenses that are designated as AF-S and this might include D5000 and D3000. If you check your manual it should tell you what lenses you can use and which you can't. Also, check the Nikon.co.uk website for a list of all the lenses and which will work with your camera.

You could also check Ken Rockwell's website, as that list all the Nikon lenses and gives his opinion on them.

According to Nikon's website the D5000 is optimized for use with AF-S and AF-I lenses. That means it's like the D40, D40s and D60 and needs a motor built-in to the lens to focus it.

I have looked at the manual and it seems they should be compatible.

Hopefully the replacement will be ok.

What you have been told is just not true, I would say that it was likely to be dirty contacts on either the lens or the body.

Thanks for your input so far guys, much appreciated.

I received the replacement today and it seems to be ok apart from one thing.

Upon firing a few test shots off I noticed it didn't AF at one point and I couldn't take the shot. In the viewfinder it said r13 which I understand is something to do with the buffer memory.

Could anyone elaborate at all as I have never had this problem with other lenses.

Thanks again.

Still sounds like dirty contacts, trycleaning the contacts on both the lens and the camera body.

I have just Googled the problem and one post I found on another forum advised turning off the ADSL, ISO noise reduction and a couple of other things and it seems to have stopped for the time being.

r13 error does suggest either dirty contacts or the lens is not fully engaged. You also get this error if you attached a third-party lens and haven't set the apeture to the maxium number.
