Confused

I have a Nikon D90 with kit lens, previously had a D50 with quite a variety of lenses. The reason for buying this model was so that I was able to use my existing lenses with it. When I went to use the 50mm 1.8d AF lens the other day, it would not auto focus. I was certain that this lens should work on the camera. Any helpful ideas folks would be much appreciated.....

It should, I use the 85mm f/1.8 D on a D90.

The first thing to check is the AF switch on the camera body - that needs to be set to AF to engage the screw drive head with the drive shaft in the lens.

You are not going to believe this. I have just run upstairs got my camera and sat down quietly. I might add that I have spent two days trying..
Have just taken off the lens yet again and replaced it, this time it has actually clicked into position. Yes, its now working auto. Thankyou for your reply though.

Ah! That'll be it. I was just about to come out with a list of things like checking the aperture is locked at f/22 and more.

Glad it's working!
