Resampling software

Hi all,
Ive been given an old photo someone wants me to tidy up and enlarge. The photo is quite small 3"x4" and was taken in the 80's in colour indoors with flash on a compact camera so theres plenty of noise. I remember reading an article in a magazine about making poster prints saying some resampling software or plugin that gave really good results but rather than try and thumb through piles of magazines I thought I would ask here if anyone can suggest the best thing to use. I'm only looking at A4 size at maximum ( I dont think I'll even be able to strtch it that far) to give you an idea of what I'm wanting.
Thanks
Adam

Hi Adam,

Genuine Fractals has a good reputation and there is a trial version available from http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=7 Personally, I use Photoshop and have upsized quite radically using CS2, 4 and now 5 with never a problem.

Try the trial, could fulfill your need.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
thanks for the suggestion I am downloading the trial now and will give it a go. I'm using CS4 and would have just used photoshop to resample it but I remembered the article about getting better results, unfortunatley as usual my memory wasnt good enough to remember what it said. Genuine Fractals does ring a bell though. I've heard that noise ninja is good for dealing with the noise (duh!) have you tried it and what results did you get?
Thanks again for the help.
Adam

Noise Ninja is very popular as are Neat Image and Grain Surgery.

There's a good comparison article of 22 different noise reducers here

Photoshop's resampling is as good as Genuine Fractals so you don't need to buy that program. In you scan the photo just make sure you choose a high resolution as that's better for enlargment.

Wow, that's a strong statement.... you're saying that a plug-in that's been around for some years, costs around 100 pounds and is often referred to by editing professionals as "the" plug-in for enlargements is actually, well..... worthless?
