Elements 8 came out last fall. So I do not think they will be another version this year. As far as Lightroom, why not download the trial copy and see?

I think Lightroom and Elements (even version 6, which I'm perfectly happy with) work well in harmony.... one doesn't really replace the other. You can do a lot of processing, non-destructive adjustments, corrections with Lightroom, but once you need blending of images, panoramas, photomerges and more creative work, you'll need layers - from Elements or full PS.

Geoff is right - they are complimentary rather than similar tools

I've got LR2 and its perfect for post processing lots of Raw shots..spot fixes etc..but no good for layering etc...
two different tools...

As suggested, try the 30 day trial of Lightroom. I purchased the latest release after trying out the Beta and it is one of the best pieces of photography software I have ever used.
