I do not know about macro lenses, never looked into them. A good zoom on a budget is the Canon EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6. It gets decent reviews and is priced pretty well. I quite like mine and I bought it used (from a reputable dealer that checks them out and offers a warranty).

What sort of zoom? Wide angle? Telephoto? "Normal"?

Macro wise, the Canon 100mm that has been suggested is very god but the Tamron 90mm and Sigma 105mm are cheaper and also very good.
The cheapest 1:1 macro lens for your camera is the Sigma 50mm.

Hi arnie187,

Have you checked this round up of the best superzooms:

http://www.photoradar.com/reviews/bu...ses-group-test

They're good on a budget and the Sigma, Tokina and Tamron ones will also be compatible with your Canon. The Sigma 18-250 came out on top in this test, costing about £400.

In the macro lens market we've also got a good round up here: http://www.photoradar.com/reviews/bu...ens-group-test

Hope these help you make up your mind!

Thanks,

Amy

Amy has suggested some interesting options.

Really depends on what you want to carry about. A superzoom makes your 18-55mm kit lens redundant (assuming you've got one!) and means you only ever have to carry the camera and that one lens, but the 18-55mm and the 55-250mm will offer better image quality than a superzoom. Its horses for courses.

It depends on your budget...

You can get long(ish) pretty cheap. The Sigma 70-300mm is £125 and they do a 50-200mm that has image stabilisation for £175.

You can do macro on the cheap as well. Things like extension tubes, coupling rings and reversing rings all make close up photography possible for not much money. For example, I shot the following two shots using a reversing ring which cost me less than £10.
