flash prioblem

I mean Problem (doohhhh)
When I use my 580ex2flash on my canon 50d and i just want to fill in the shadows on a portrait all I seem to get is a bright face and a darker background. should i be use other setting other than letting the flash do its ettl ?

Try flash exposure bracketing in ettl.Or go for manual flash and gradually reduce or increase the output .

Also try a narrower aperture for exposing the background a little better.
