July issue -Letter of the Month!

I hate to complain about a magazine I enjoy as much as this one but I have to say the Your Letters pages I found ridiculous. There were nine, yes nine, letters/e-mails regarding Video in DSLR's ; there were four letters giving advice on techniques which may or may not have been useful; and there was an extremely interesting, and to some perhaps provocative, letter regarding amateur v pro Wedding photography. Given these ,but possibly excluding the video letters , what was the Letter of the Month? A Thankyou letter from a Photoplus Apprentice participant from last year! Now pat yourselves on the back by all means but at least encourage some creative participation by readers and please don't give valuable prizes to someone who has already benefitted enormously from one of your training sessions and really has contributed nothing more other than to say Thanks.

I agree with Dagwood, though wonder what the alternative would be out of the ones published.

Although I have responded to "Call yourself a wedding photographer" in forum and by email, I wouldn't have expected you to make that your letter of the month.

Tim van Someren's response to Peter Holme was good I thought, but again, with one out of an agreeable number of comments, it would be politically difficult to star one. (Small "p")

My choice might have been "Lenticulars", which made me want to know more.

However "Letter of the Month" will ever be divisive, but should be an interesting and thought provoking part of the Editor's job.

Hi Dagwood and hallsworthb,

Sorry for the late reply - Issue 38 is looming so we've all been working hard!

Also, apologies about our choice for Letter of the Month that has upset you. It's always difficult to choose the best letter and this time, we chose the 'Skills on Skomer' letter partly because it reminded of us how difficult shooting on location can be, particularly when the weather is so changeable, and partly to help encourage others to apply to be Apprentices.

We thought that this letter helped to show how much people really get out of a day with a pro and how the skills can be applied long after the shoot is over. We really didn't want it to come across as favouritism or anything like that, so I really apologise.

We really do appreciate every single correspondence we receive and we'll try to take a closer look at the Your Letters page in future.

Apologies once again.

Carly
