June 10 issue re Skills- sharpen your shots selectively

Hi I'm new to photoshop and Photo plus.

I have just tried my first lesson and have become very frustrated. From Photo shop June 2010
Page 47 'sharpen your shots selectively'
.
The problem is I have CS and the lesson is for elements so I am trying to overcome the differences in the menue's.

I am guessing that enhance-adjust sharpness in elements= Filter-Sharpen- smart sharpenin CS as this gives the 'remove lens blur' option described.

I have followed the steps accurately, i thought however when I make a mask in step 7 the models face goes black in the areas I am going over with the brush. I am not getting a face 'mask' appear on the white mask in the layers area. I have selected the top layer as described. I have closed the project several times and started again, my daughter has tried it and I have tried both unmask sharp and smart sharpen.
Can anyone help.
Thanks
Pete

Got It!

Not sure what Layer-CreateClippingMask is doing in CS but it is different to what happens in the video when George uses Element.

after some experimenting with step 7 using CS its-

layer- layer mask- reveal all

This brings up the mask linked to the layer (with a paper clip symbol showing). The same as when Georg Cairns uses Layer-CreateClippingMask in elements on the video. Brushing the face now makes the mask appear on the white mask in the 'layers' area not on the main picture.

Hooray - first lesson completed successfully
