Thats true for camera AF systems but the AF motors in a lot of lenses isn't quick enough for fast moving action.
Trap focus is also useful in macro work where tiny movements can alter the DoF or sharpness of the shot. Trap focus helps you ensure the shot is taken when the focal point is exactly where you want it - especially if you're shooting hand held.
