What is the best lens protector

Now that I have purchased my new 50D camera, what would be the best form of lens protector, I would have normally used a UV filter, is this still the case?

A UV filter doesn't really have any other purpose these days. Digital sensors are nowhere near as sensitive to UV light as film was so they are often sold as lens protectors. You could also go for a skylight filter which is just plain glass.

Plain glass (skylight filter as Chris recommended) would be good, or always keep a lens hood on.
