Long zoom lens for Olympus E510?

It's impossible to say what the problem is without seeing an example.

As I said before, if you're setting a custom WB with white paper and it's still off then either you're doing it wrong or the camera is dodgy. Can you see it on the camera screen or is it just visible on the computer?

I tend to leave my Olympus E620 in Auto White Balance mode and adjust it in ACR if it needs altering.

I've near enough got it sorted out to be perfect, it all depends on the angle at which I face the camera when making a custom white balance with the Expodisc. I eamiled them and they replied saying i should stand near the object being photographed and point the camera towards the position i'll be standing in when snapping the photo but I got a green tint with that method so today I pointed the camer towards the sky about 45 degress off the right of the sun and got a brilliant accurate white balance. But then yesterday i did the same and got a green tint again, so I pointed the camer towards the subject being photographed and got an excellent white balance so I think its a very hit and miss affair and all depends on what light there is, where you're standing, if there's any trees near you, if there's anything blocking the light etc.......

By the way, i've just looked at old pictures I took with my old Olympus E-500 and the resolution looks quite a bit better than my E-510 I have now, how does that work out? The E-500 didn't have IS built in and was 8mp whears my E-510 has IS built in and is supposed to be 10mp. As I zoom in on pictures i've taken I can clearly see pixelation on my E5-510 images whereas I have to zoom in a lot further to get the same pixelation on my old E-500 images. Its not blur, its pixelation, and that as far as i know is due to resolution I think.

Can you post an example so we can see what you're are talking about. As you can appreciate, it's difficult to comment without the benefit of seeing it for yourself.

As Ian said, post an example or 2...

You have to make sure that you're comparing like with like though. Are the ISO settings the same? Same lens? Same aperture? Same shutter speed? Same light levels? If these things are different then you can't draw any conclusions from pixel peeping...

Thats why people like PR et al. have labs to test these things in. Even ambient temperature can alter the performance of a lens.

I just read that the E-500 had a Kodak sensor and the E-510 has a Pannasonic sensor so its pretty obvious that that must have something to do with image quality between the 2 cameras. I will say 1 thing though, the E-510 definately has less noise than the E-500 did, and the IS although not brilliant does work and helps out. I deleted the green tint pictures today, sorry, if it happens again i'll post one up for you guys to see. I've always been in the habbit of deleting the Raw files after i've modified white balance, added a bit of sharpening and stuff, because my pictures aren't that great anyway.

I've owned nearly every E-system camera and can tell you that the kodak sensor while having a different colour look certainly did not have more resolution than the E-510.

It is more proberly down to user skill fluctuation than any short coming of the cameras.

Both at a 100% crop (actual pixel size) and ISO 100

Image on the left E-500 with the added advantage of being took in a studo using studio flash and a smaller aperture.

Image on the right natural light handheld and a wide aperture,I've taken many pics with both cameras and the E-510 walks all over the E-500 as far as image quality is concerned especially over ISO 200. I now own the E-30 and E-620 so it not a case of defending my camera as I no longer have the 510

By the way I use the ZD 70-300mm constantly and find it a very good lens for the money, there are better but they cost two to three times as much.

The one other thing I would add to this is that, if you're considering getting rid of the E-510 and replacing it with either a D90 or 50D as you said here, why buy a new lens for the E-510?!

I've decided not to buy a new lens for my E-510 now, i'm just gonna keep the 14-42mm as the only lens and give the camera to my daughter. I'm managing to get a lot better white balance now and i've found out its all where abouts you point the camera each different time when the Expodisc is on the front as to how the colour will look. Expo imaging emailed me saying to point towards the source so i've tried and got good results sometimes, then terrible green tinted results other times, so then i've pointed towards the sky those times and got accurate results, so I think its hit and miss as to where you have to point the camera in order to get the best results, but i'm learning to try a couple of times if I get a bad white balance the first time.

Best quality pictures with the Olympus e-510. I have started writing about getting good images from your camera - if you camera happens to be an Olympus E-510. Most of the time I will be writing with the dual lens kit in mind, although most of what I say will apply to other lenses as well.
