I have a canon 50d a 580ex2 flash and no hand held metering system. I cant understand how to meter off my camera. although I probably do it and not realise.
Firstly I highly recommend you buy a handheld meter. Get a secondhand one if neccesary.
Otherwise switch into AV mode. Set your apature, and read the shutter speed. Adjust the ISO if really necessary until a desired shutter speed is achieved. And don't forget to use a different exposure analysis mode if required.
Note the settings and switch back to manual.
You may have to make further adjustments by fiddling, because thats not the perfect way, but it gives you a good approximation.
Thanks Paul , You are now talking to a novice and a bit of a thickie here. So I have a metre readining of f4.5 at1.6sec ss. i go to manual and just put those settings in,and shoot with my off camera flash?
Be patient with me I am sure it will click in eventualy
