Photoshop Elements 8 Layers Mask Problem

When I use a layer mask in PSE8 (and PSE7) it doesn’t always work.
For example, I’ll create a levels adjustment layer, and then click on
the layer mask to activate it, select the brush tool but when I brush
it has no affect.

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions would be most appreciated –
this is driving me nuts!

Thanks.

Three possibilities that are user error.

1- you sometimes have the impressonist brush selected which will have no effect on the layer mask.

2- you do not have the black colour swatch selected.

3-You have the blend mode of the brush or adjustment layer set to something other than normal.

It can be easy to forget if you have altered any of these setting previously for something else and presume the program is faulty.

The only software problem would be that your preference settings file is corrupt and if this were the case the problem would exist all the time and you would have to reset it.
