Noise

I guess a fast lens is the main answer to noise but many amateurs cannot afford or cannot justify the purchase of a fast lens so the next best thing might be noise reduction software.
I have spent some time checking out Topaz Denoise which seems the best of the bunch for under £50. (30 day trial key supplied)
Obviously no software can match what a fast lens can do but I have been quite surprised at the improvements of photos taken at ISO 3200....perhaps a topic for a future article in the magazine !!

I would use a film grain emulation... it covers all the obvious raw/jpeg noise really nicely and looks stunning in prints... there are examples here :
