50mm prime lens and its uses

hi i am interested in the sony 50mm f1.4 prime lens as reviewed in the magazine a few months ago.good review and i appreciate what its main uses are,but i would just like to no if a prime lens also works well if used for close up work,i understand its not a specific macro lens.any thoughts on this would be appreciated,thanks for looking..
