Size of tripod?

Hi,

Im looking for abit of advice on tripods,im starting college soon and im in need of a better tripod,at the moment im using a Velbon cx 540,and im looking to upgrade to anything that doesent have these leg suport things.

My question is,when it comes to hieght, does the size of the tripod matter for the things i'll be shooting? Mostly my stuff is landscapes, but im wanting something that will do both,so im looking at a few Benbo's,anyone had use/or use one of these?

Im welcome to suggestions also

John

The "leg support things" brace the legs and the central column - actually do quite a good job and, with legs extended, don't get in the way - so I'd say there's not a problem with setting it up for landscapes on even the roughest terrain.

Benbo - and others - certainly don't have the braces on many (possibly any?) models, but the stability that the braces give has to come from somewhere - and it's very often in extra weight of the legs. You can get lightweight Benbos and others without the braces, but I don't think they're any more stable than an equivalent Velbon with them.

Of course, the Benbo does look pretty trendy with your luggage on the train or at the airport......
