I think kit will always have it place but if you do not see an image no amount of technology can help you out.

We recently had a guy come in to our camera club to show us his work, he uses a Canon 5d MkII but he also showed us some of his work he done using a £100 compact the images from the compact were stunning as were the ones from the Canon he says as long as you know your equipment in side out and its limitations you will get good results.

The images from both the compact and the Canon backed this up.

Just more of the same... everything is "kit" Im sure his stuff was very good but the important thing in his statement was know the limitations. If you shoot sport you need high frame/burst rates and fast focusing lens. If you want amazingly detailed landscapes printed A2 and above you need full frame virtually noise free sensors and quality lens. If you are doing street you need compact discreet cameras, for certain portraitures you need very wide aperture lens. If you want to shoot in extreme conditions, think Antarctic, desert, rainforest you will need weather sealed lens and bodies. Obviously what I am saying is horses for courses. Be happy with whatever you have.
