mac/cs tech help needed

Are there any tech wizards out there? I have moved over to mac from windows. I love the imac but now have problems converting my nef files to dng. I have photoshop CS (version 8) on my mac. Mac operating OSX version 10.6.2. I downloaded the suggested adobe dng converter camera raw plug-in update - 2.4. But when i try to convert my nef files in the dng converter i get the message - Error the source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files. Can anyone help please?

I think somewhere along the line you may be getting a bit confused. There is no 'dng converter camera raw plug-in' as you describe. The plug-in (latest v2.4 for your Mac and CS) is as the name implies simply a plug-in - it has nothing to do with any conversion process whether to the dng format or otherwise. What you need to do is download the standalone dng converter for the Mac available here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...jsp?ftpID=4619 which you place on the desktop and is independent of Photoshop itself. Drag and drop your NEF files onto the converter desktop icon and after setting up a few available options your NEF files will be converted to the DNG format. Once converted, these DNG files will be recognised by Photoshop.

The camera raw plug-in (in your case v2.4 the last to be released for CS) will only open native RAW files from cameras that are supported by that and previous versions of the plug-in. Adobe's own RAW format (DNG) is able to be read by any version of camera raw.

If you still experience problems post back advising which camera is producing the original NEF files.

Hi m8 thanx 4 your help it is really appreciated and god are right regarding me being a bit confused. On my old p.c with C.S (version 8) it would not read my NEF files when i got a nikon d300 my first digital camera. So i had to download an adobe DNG converter. I was told this was needed because C.S version 8 was old and my d300 was new. When i'd downloaded the dng converter then i could see them as pics on the pc and in photoshop. My IMac will see them ok (i could use Iphoto) but Photoshop can't see them they're shown as grey files not pics so i assume i need to put them through an adobe dng converter as with th old pc?

Yes you've got it - exactly the same procedure with the Mac as it was on the PC - you need the DNG converter that I linked to previously.

No you're still not getting it sorry. What you should have, although in your case it really doesn't matter anymore, is the camera raw plug-in (v2.4) available from here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...ftpID=2863 and installed as per these instructions:

To install:
  1. Exit Photoshop CS.
  2. Open My Computer.
  3. Double-click Local Disk C
  4. Navigate to Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats.
    1. If you have the Adobe Creative Suite, navigate to:
      Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats.
  5. Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
  6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder.
  7. Launch Photoshop CS.
Just to repeat - this is the camera raw plug-in for your version of CS and has nothing to do with the DNG converter which is a completely different thing altogether. You now need to download and install the DNG converter version 5.6 from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...jsp?ftpID=4619 and install it in the following manner:

To open a DMG file:
Double-click the file. This will open Disk Copy, which mounts the image on your desktop.

To Install the DNG Converter:

1. Exit the DNG Converter
2. Open the download file and double-click Adobe DNG Converter and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. The DNG Converter is now available in your Applications directory.

Thanks so much for your time and patience trying to help me but i'm now more confused than ever. I thought i'd done the things your saying and i've got the adobe dng converter on my desk top and old one moved to another place and new one in applications - Someone talked me through the procedure over the phone. BUT i've come back to photography after 20 years ( skint raising kids) because i've lost my job through ill health and wanted a hobby. Due to medication including morphine i now find it difficult to understand/remember new stuff. The person who convinced me to get a mac is unable to help. Consequently 3 months on i still have a very expensive aluminium (imac) ornament on my desk.

I'm very sorry to read of your difficulties and trust my post didn't come across as being somewhat insensitive. I wonder if perhaps there is another way for you to seek help other than the man who convinced you to get a Mac. I'm thinking along the lines of maybe a local computer shop, local camera club or even a local school etc. I'm sure that if you print out a copy of the details I gave in my previous post someone from one of these organisations would be only to pleased to help you. The actual procedure wouldn't be very time consuming and it can all be completed within 10 minutes or so.

Thanks once again, i thought i'd wait until i'm having a good day and see if can make sense of what you say i need to do and what i had already done because i thought i'd done what you say. I was also thinking along the lines of getting assistance from elsewhere but i'm not sure where to ask. Might try the Apple store. Thanks very much

Thanks Forseti, i re-read your message later and realised i'd downloaded the 2.4 version dng converter. So i trashed that and downloaded the 5.6 version as per your advise and it worked fine. First time for 3 months i've been able to import any pics.
