Question Softboxes Vs Umbrellas

Hi,
I'm slowly trying to build up studio equipment for portraits.
I have purchased http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-...x-kit/p1027275 now I know softboxes give softer light for portraits but what do umbrellas do and do I need one? How do Umbrellas differ from softboxes? Any help would be appreciated!

Regards,
djSupport
