A question about FF and converters

hi everybody just a Question if you have a full frame body such as say a D3 and you use a 400mm 2.8 and want to use a tele converter, does the fullframe stay or does it go down to DX mode , just a question Milky

I guess it depends on whether or not the converter passes through the relevant electrical signals. For what its worth, the kenko 2x operates correctly on a D700.

I use the Nikon 400mm F2.8 AIS with both the Nikon 1.4 and 2x converters without problems on my D3. DX only comes into the equation if you use a DX lens like the Nikon 12-24mm F4 but even then you can turn the DX mode off and use that lens down to 17mm before you get the darken corners. Also used the converters on my Nikon 300mm F4 on the D3. All the Nikon converters were produced for film cameras and I've used a Sigma 1.4 converter on my Bigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 with the D3, but manual focus only, giving me 700mm reach.

Because a TC magnifies the centre of the image, it would seem more likely that a DX lens could do FX when fitted with a TC. At the short end of the DX zooms, it's probably not worth it.
