One of the skills it's worth developing is looking at other peoples shots which interest you, and trying to work out for yourself how they have been taken, of course on forums like this you can ask people and see how close you are, but one day you will see an image you wish to recreate, and you might not even know who the photographer is.
The lack of
specular highlights tell you that the light source has been a large one, not a flash head. The way the light falls across the cars shows the light source is high and to the left, and a little in front of the cars.
Because of the large light source a black background would have to be used (or post processed), and the fact it is so very black indicates that some post processing via levels has probably be done.
