Tagging RAW shots in Windows 7

I can see both jpegs and RAW thumbnails in Windows Explorer but I cannot add tags to both. It's ok if I sort the jpegs from the RAW files but just can't seem to get Tags to affix to RAW images. Has anyone found a way of doing this?

What software are you using to tag your images?

I used to tag images when using PSE6's Organiser but stopped that some time ago. I now use the Windows7 tagging facility when viewing files in Explorer. It's great on jpgs but if there is one or more Raw files in the folder it stops you tagging them as a group unless you "remove" the Raw image(s) from the group to be tagged. This means when you search by tags and Explorer finds all files with that tag it leaves out the Raw images.I found PSE6's tagging and use of Organiser unwieldy but maybe that's just me!

I'm not a W7 user so just guessing here but I think you'll find that because RAW images are just raw (unprocessed data) with the file not writable to (even in a RAW editor) that this is how it's supposed to work. With jpegs any old programme can write into it but with RAW images a sidecar is produced e.g. XMP files in the case of Photoshop. I've never used Elements either but I think you'll find that it also produces sidecar files for RAW files.

One thing you might like to try is to split the RAW files into a sub folder of the jpegs and have another go. I wouldn't hold out much hope though for the reasons given above but who knows. As an aside, Windows cannot read XMP files anymore than say Canons DPP software - this is the preserve of Adobe.

Thankyou Forseti, If nowt else your suggestion of a sub folder for the Raw imges has made for a much tidier appearance to each jpeg folder and will assist any retagging required.

Not really as most dam programs and some raw converters that are not Adobe can read XMP sidecar files.
