What makes you think the Canon can't do this. Using EOS Utility (software that comes with the camera) you can change settings and operate the camera from the PC. In fact, if you are an Adobe Lightroom user you can even set up a watched folder so that the images captured from the camera via the PC are sent to and viewed directly by Lightroom.

As to everything else - I have to say that I am in full agreement with the comprehensive response that Chris has made.

The only thing I would say is that, while you can shoot tethered with the Canon software, it doesn't help if you're outside. Although Nikon charge for their tethered software (Camera Control Pro), there are free programs out there (a useful link for Nikon users that want to try this is here).

Oh, by the way (and apologies for thread jacking), I like the David Bailey quote in your signature. Something we can all aspire to!

Hi Jimmy,

As I said earlier if you decide to buy an E620 then I assure you, you will not regret it. It's a camera with plenty of scope to develop with you as your knowledge of how to use it and skills in taking better images improves, so you will not find yourself overtaking it's abilities.

As Chris has so eloquently explained above, these are all very capable and fine quality cameras. You could buy any one of them and not be dissapointed. But to ensure that you really like a camera you do have to try it for yourself and don't entirely rely on the opinions of others. You are going to be the one learning how to use this camera, so the easier you are able to find your way around it to access all the various settings, the less frustrated you will be with it. This in turn will make the whole learning process all the more enjoyable and easier to remember. And lets be honest, the reason we all take photographs is because we enjoy it! It gives us a buzz when we produce an image that we like. It gives enormous satisfaction when you know you've got something just right!

So as a starting point the Olympus is cracking value for money and with the two lenses thrown in as part of the package it will give you much more flexibility, but try before you buy if you can.

Hey guys, thanks for all the insights.

As to the software was i refering to the D3000. Not the canon.

Thanks for the points chris. Each considered,
I'm still going to go for the 620 because it seems great for the money and its got a decent live view and an articulate screen.

I'am however back at uni on saturday and luckily i live about 5 minutes away from the London camera exchange so will be sure to try it out first. The d5000, 450d and the e620 are on the list but reading wise im quite set on the olympus.

The E-620 is a great camera and (for what it's worth) I think that's the best choice in your situation. Have fun with it. You could even join in our weekend competition - it's a great way to get you thinking about your photography!
