Your first post Dave so first off - welcome
Now then, you say 72dpi but dpi (dots per inch) refers to printing but as it's Christmas we'll forgive you.

What of course you meant to say was ppi (pixels per inch) and in this case, if you divide both your given dimensions i.e. 400 and 600 by 72 then that's good for a print of approx 5.5 inches x 8.33 inches. That said, 240ppi is a more acceptable figure for a respectable print. If you check the original pixel dimensions of your image then it's pretty easy to work out what ppi you need to produce an A4 sized print of 210mm x 297mm (8.3 x 11.7 inches).
As to protecting your images then this is always going to be difficult in this day and age as software does exist (for the determined of mind) to up size your small resolution images. The only really safe way (relatively) is to stick a copyright mark right across the face of the image and reduce the opacity of it a bit so that whilst the image is still viewable it would make it difficult for someone to clone out all the copyright information. The only 100% method of course is not to post images on the web at all but of course that doesn't sound like a reasonable option to you.
Merry Christmas
