press passes

how do you get them. I'm new to photography and would like to get into sport photography. do you have to work for a publication to get one?

Generally it is a lot easier to get press passes if you are working for a publication or agency.
Get in touch with a lower level club directly and ask them if they need any pictures and attack it from that angle. That way you'll be able to build up a portfolio to start approaching agencies etc.

Your local paper is the first step. Try to build a relationship there. If you get pictures published you might start getting press releases sent to you, inviting you to events. It is hard though. Today the world and his wife want to sell images, so you will be doing something hundreds are already offering.

Thirty years and 50 publications after I started, it is harder than ever to sell images. There is just too much competition out there. Many accepting greatly reduced prices for images, some offering free photos just to get a foot in the door.

That foot in the door is so important though. Without that, you are just one one many hoping for a start. Good luck though!

I rang and asked nicely and got one for belton horse trials. a lot of other places just said no, surprisingly all my local places said no, despite me being a student.
