Halo when using Gaussian Blur

I am being driven to distraction trying to get this right: if I exclude an area from the blur, then that area develops a substantial halo around the edge. I have tried setting feathering to zero, but still no luck. What am I missing?

Try feathering more - it'll blend the blur in.

I would suggest you post an example image as it's difficult to understand without seeing what you mean.

I've done a very crude gaussian blur on the image below and get no obvious halo-ing

You need to have the picture hosted online. You can use the galleries here or you can use Flickr or a similar site.

Once you have the image online, navigate to it, right click on it and select properties (if you're using the photoradar galleries you will need to use the enlarged version of the image). From the properties box you can copy the URL of the photo.

To insert that into a thread you need to use the following tags (but you will have to replace the round brackets with square [ ] ones)...

(img)paste the address here(/img)

I highlighted the address that you gave, chose copy and then in replying to this post click on the little yellow envelope with a mountain, up pops a box and then copy into that. Must say this image is a little small for critique though - haven't you got a bigger one as it appears you may have provided the link address for the thumbnail and not the full size image?

I can see something but not a lot.

I usually upload photos at 1028 x 768 or 640 x 480

Ok, tried saving it as a 554kb sized file, once uploaded to flickr, it reverts back to a 75kb file. Any idea why? And how does one delete pics on flickr?
