It's a heat difference engine. Invented by Robert Stirling in the 1800's it is supposedly more energy efficient than a steam engine and quieter running. The particular engine I have can be sat on top of a cup of hot tea or coffee, and the heat given off is enough to drive the flywheel. You can also sit it on a block of ice, and it will run, but in reverse. I've been fascinated by them for a number of years, but that's probably the engineer in me.
