Question Filter system for 11-16 lens

Hello there,

I am looking at ND grad filters for my Tokina 11-16 f2.8, obviously for landscape use.

I do have a Cokin P-series system (adaptor, holder and ND grad) for my 18-70 lens but I am not sure if I can just buy a thread adaptor for the Tokina as the P-series system is supposed to be for focal length 28mm and above (on 35mm format). I do have a D300, therefore APC sensor, but I am not sure the P-series will be any good with such a wide angle.

Cokin make the X-Pro system which supposedly is good for 15mm focal with 35mm format, therefore should be good at rouhgly 11mm for APC, but the holder is three times more expensive, and I am not sure whether the square filters I have for the P-series will be usable or if I need specific square filters for the X-pro holder.

Anybody can shed any light on this?

Hi there, welcome to the forums.

You would need to buy new filters for the X-Pro system as the filter holder is wider. The X-Pro filters are 130mm wide and the Z-Pro are 100mm wide so the filter holders are wider as well.

The Z-Pro ones might be wide enough and they should be cheaper than the X-Pro ones but whatever size you choose you're going to have to buy new filters as well as a new holder.

Cokin make a slim-line holder which only holds one filter. Have you tried that, I find its just about good enough to use p-series filters on my Nikon 12-24 (I have to take the UV filter off first).

I cut down a Chinese P-system holder from 3 slots to 1, for use with my Tokina 12-24. With 3 slots the holder was quite visible at 12mm; cut down I don't see it.
