Nikon D80 flash problems

I have a Nikon D80 and the flash works fine with my lenses that were made for digital cameras (2 kit lenses and a 20mm) but I have a 50mm lens that is older (1970's I think?) and I can't get the flash to work with it at all. I am making sure the flash is on (the flash icon shows). I've taken it to a couple of camera shops - no one can seem to give me a reason the flash won't work and they don't have any suggestions on how to make it work. Any suggestions here?

Thanks,
Jill

If it's a non-CPU lens - with a few exceptions that means manual focus - you will need to use the flash in manual mode. See page 95 of the D80 user manual for how to set the built in speedlight, and 117-118 for the detail on the restrictions imposed by lenses.

Well, balls. I have an E-series lens and it is not compatible with the TTL flash control. (assuming I'm reading page 117 correctly)

Thanks so much for the page numbers though! I really appreciate the help.
