Nikkor 18-300VR

Setting aside my search for a potential new camera for the moment, I've been curious about getting the [COLOR=#0066cc]NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR[/COLOR] as a replacement for my 18-105VR and 70-300VR.

I know that zoom lenses are always a compromise, and ultra-zooms like the 18-300 more so, but I'm also conscious that the majority of my photography takes place using the one lens that is on the camera all the time (which is the 18-105). That's partly because I don't want to carry my camera bag everywhere I go, and partly because its rare that I get time to dip in to my bag and change lenses (due to an impatient wife.... ). A recent trip to Morocco was shot solely on the 18-105 as I could only take the one lens.

So I feel I'd gain flexibility with a single lens (and gain weight...) but what would I lose if I were to change my 2 lenses for the 18-300? Any opinions? Suggestions? Anyone done the same?

I'm thinking of upgrading my Tamron 18 - 270mm Dii PZD Ultra zoom lens for the Nikon 18 - 300mm. The Nikon lens is sharper than the Tamron as a rule and focusing is slightly quicker due to the ring motor Nikon now use in their latest generation of lenses. However, in a recent super zoom group test in the N Photo magazine, the Sigma 18 - 250mm came out tops because is had the greatest optical sharpness over it's entire focal range than any other lens on test. Yes it may not quite have the outright pull of the 18 - 300mm, but it would be significantly better for focal range than your 18 - 105mm.

Thanks again Ian, will have a look at the Sigma! Will have to consider how important the top end is to me. If you've seen my reply on the other thread, the Nikkor 24-300 might also be a consideration, moreso if I consider full frame. (I really should have just made 1 thread for both topics... Ah well!)
